In the 1930s, United Airlines pioneered the hiring of female flight attendants. It created a completely new profession for females. Ellen Church played a major part in this as it was done on her suggestion. Some of the early duties for these hired females were knocking down fences so that planes that were on the ground due to bad weather conditions can take off.

United Airlines also happened to be the first among commercial aviation to have a flight kitchen. 

The first meal which was served was a choice for passengers between scrambled eggs and fried chicken. 

In 1997, United Airlines was one of the five founders of the Star Alliance which was the first global airline alliance. The other four members of the alliance were Air Canada, Lufthansa, Thai International, and SAS.
