Spirit Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Policy

Spirit Airlines is a well-known ultra-low-cost carrier with its headquarter in Florida. The airline ranks eighth in terms of the largest passenger carriers in North America. It has been successfully operating flights for over 30 years now to over 80 destinations.

If you are planning on having your child fly alone to one of these destinations as an unaccompanied minor with Southwest Airlines, it is a good idea to know the basic guidelines related to the Unaccompanied Minor policy.

According to Spirit Airlines’ Unaccompanied minor policy children of certain ages can travel alone on domestic direct flights (this includes U.S Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico). Children are not eligible for traveling alone on international flights, connecting flights, and domestic flights which have a change of aircraft scheduled or a change in the flight number.

If your child is under the age of 4 years then he/she is not eligible for traveling alone on a Spirit Airlines flight. They will have to be accompanied by passengers with a minimum age of 15 years. If your child is between the ages of 5–14 then they are eligible for traveling as an unaccompanied minor. If the minor is over the age of 15 then they are not required to travel under the unaccompanied minor service of the airline. Although, they might have to show any document that can verify their age.

Spirit Airlines also provides the passengers with additional guidelines for Unaccompanied minor travel. These are listed below.

The passenger is advised to have Checked In at least 60 minutes before the scheduled flight departure.
During the Spirit Airlines Reservations process, you should mention that the particular booking is for a minor traveling alone.
During the check-in process, the parent or guardian of the minor has to complete an unaccompanied minor form with photo identification.
The airline will provide the unaccompanied minor a lanyard which has to be worn throughout the flight journey as it is needed for Spirit Airlines’ employees to identify the minor.
The parent/guardian who will be dropping off the child will have to get a gate pass at the ticket counter. The same goes for the pick-up parent/guardian.
